How brains learn math is the key to understanding why some people stumble and fall, and why some people are successful at math. There is no specific "math person" that is just immediately successful. The deliberate practice of math, and a teacher who works with students to help them learn at their own pace is the key.

I was pleased to have stumbled upon this course while searching for mathematics courses. It changed my perceptions about rote learning and gave me a new understanding of how we learn. I loved this course! After discovering John Mighton and Barbara Oakley through the Chalk and Talk podcast, I wanted a deeper understanding of the research behind JUMP Math and how to use the curriculum most effectively. This course provided exactly that. Making Math Click clearly explains the cognitive science and research-based principles that drive JUMP Math, particularly around reducing cognitive load, building conceptual understanding, and supporting student confidence. As a first-grade teacher, this knowledge has made me a more informed and intentional user of the curriculum. After just one semester of implementing JUMP Math, I am already seeing a meaningful difference. Students who previously would have struggled are experiencing daily success, showing increased confidence, and demonstrating higher motivation than I’ve seen in past years. Completing this course has also better prepared me to implement JUMP Math with greater precision and effectiveness moving forward. I highly recommend this course to educators who want a research-aligned approach to math instruction that truly supports all learners. While it pairs beautifully with JUMP Math, the ideas and research shared extend far beyond any single curriculum and are valuable for teachers at all grade levels. I have even recommended this course to my nieces, who are currently in high school and college, because the insights into how people learn math are universally relevant. This course has deepened my understanding of effective math instruction and will continue to inform my teaching practice moving forward.
